A cheque is nice but pallets of 155mm high explosive rounds say you really care. Let’s spend cash onshore and send consumables of combat instead! ⬇️
United24 is reporting that Ukraine will receive an additional 15,000 155mm high explosive rounds from Denmark in response to Ukraine’s request to reprioritise aid to the most pressing military needs. Despite the evolution of drone warfare, this key artillery round is still being fired at rates between 5 – 7,000 a day during heavy fighting. Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov explains why the king of battle still reigns:
“Long-range munitions are currently one of the key requests from the frontline. In the context of the constant expansion of the drone kill zone, they allow for more effective targeting of the enemy, its logistics, and command posts, while reducing risks for our troops.”
Likewise, the Australian government recently committed an additional $70 million in financial aid to Ukraine. This cash contribution will go towards the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List, a mechanism which allows the forces of the free to support Ukraine with weapons and equipment they need most.
But why aren’t we taking the opportunity to both provide Ukraine with aid and rebuild critical Industrial capability onshore? Our military aid should have two purposes – support the forces of the free and rebuild Australia’s arsenal as we face the most dangerous geopolitical circumstances in our region since WWII.
Why not accelerate the establishment of Rheinmetall NIOA Munitions new forging capability for 155mm M795 projectiles in Maryborough? While we are at it let’s re-establish the ability to manufacture fuses, primers, propellant and fill and finish projectile shells onshore. Send aid to Ukraine as an end to end finished product ready to be fired to defend freedom. Our material support to Ukraine and other allies and partners in conflict can and should be a catalyst for rebuilding Australia’s industrial capacity.
Deterrence doesn’t end with our Defence Forces. Scaling our industrial capacity is just as important as exercising our Soldiers, Sailors and Aviators – let’s build a future ready arsenal that enhances our Sovereign Capability!
Food for thought as always!
